Bloodstream is a song by Ed Sheeran and appears as the seventh track on his second studio album, X. A reworked version featuring Rudimental was released on February 11, 2015 and it was released as the fourth single from the album. It also serves as the lead single from Rudimental's second studio album We the Generation.

Background[]

The song is about Sheeran taking MDMA during a wedding celebration in Ibiza. He claims that during the experience he "fell in love with a beanbag" and that "[he] felt anxiety, [he] felt love, [he] felt warm, [he] felt a bit weird". Sheeran made a live PA to perform the song during co-writer Rudimental's set at Glastonbury Festival 2014 on 27 June 2014. It was revealed by Sheeran on 11 December 2014 at the BBC Music Awards that Bloodstream will be served as the fourth single from his album.

Critical Reception[]

In a Billboard track-by-track review, writer Jason Lipshutz stated: "'Bloodstream' features a delicious guitar line and a virtuoso performance from a defeated Sheeran, who asks "How'd I get so faded?" before pleading to not be left alone. There are disturbing references to alcoholism and gospel vibes, and while Sheeran's narration has never felt so vulnerable, his songwriting is rarely this self-assured." [1]

Live Performances[]

Sheeran performed "Bloodstream" on 13 April 2015 on the results show of the second series of The X Factor in New Zealand

Music Video[]

A music video featuring actor Ray Liotta was released on 23 March 2015.

Track listing[]

  2. "I Will Take You Home" - 3:58

Lyrics[]

Iโ€™ve been spinning out for time
Couple women by my side
I got sinnin' on my mind
Sipping on red wine
Iโ€™ve been sitting here for ages
Ripping out the pages
How'd I get so faded
How'd I get so faded
Oh
No no donโ€™t leave me lonely now
If you love me how
You'll never learn
Ooh
Color crimson in my eyes
One or two could free my mind
This is how it ends
I feel the chemicals burn in my bloodstream

Fading out again
I feel the chemicals burn in my bloodstream
So tell me when it kicks in

Iโ€™ve been looking for a love
Thought Iโ€™d find her in a bottle
God make me another one
Iโ€™ll be feeling this tomorrow
Lord forgive me for the things Iโ€™ve done
I was never meant to hurt no one
I saw scars upon her, Broken hearted lover
Oh
No no donโ€™t leave me lonely now
If you love me how
You'll never learn
Ooh
Color crimson in my eyes
One or two could free my mind
This is how it ends
I feel the chemicals burn in my bloodstream

Fading out again
I feel the chemicals burn in my bloodstream
So tell me when it kicks in

So tell me when it kicks in
All the voices in my mind
Calling out across the line
All the voices in my mind
Calling out across the line
All the voices in my mind
Calling out across the line
All the voices in my mind
Calling out across the line
All the voices in my mind
Calling out across the line
All the voices in my mind
Calling out across the line

Tell me when it kicks in
I saw scars upon her
Tell me when it kicks in
Broken hearted
Tell me when it kicks in
I saw scars upon her
Tell me when it kicks in
Broken hearted
Tell me when it kicks in
I saw scars upon her
Tell me when it kicks in
Broken hearted
Tell me when it kicks in
I saw scars upon her
Tell me when it kicks in
Broken hearted
So Tell me when it kicks in
I saw scars upon her
Tell me when it kicks in
Broken hearted
Tell me when it kicks in
I saw scars upon her
Tell me when it kicks in
Broken hearted
